When Joshua lead the Israelites over the Jordan River on dry land (Joshua 4:4-7), the priests were told to leave twelve stones, representing the twelve tribes of Israel...

What kinds of enemies did Israel have to battle in the promised land?

The prerequisite for perpetuating this eternal and permanent legacy to the whole human race is recorded in Joshua 1:6-9: Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them. Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

The Lord promised Israel that He would go before them and deliver them from their enemies if they would trust his Word. He promises the same for us. The battle is the Lord’s. (I Samuel 17:47) If we believe this truth our perspective about life will be different from that of people without God. Our extremities will be seen as divine opportunities for God to fight for us; trouble will be welcomed. Tribulation is inevitable in order for truth about Christ to be seen by ourselves and others; problems will be seen as divine orchestrations to flesh out the incarnate life of Christ through us.

As with the nation of Israel our only offensive weapon is the Sword, the Word of God (Ephesians 6:17). Men without Christ worship the creature rather than God. (Romans 1:25) It is going to be absolutely essential in the present and future to know and understand how to apply the Word of God to our everyday lives.

Study and meditate on Psalm 119:1-176. These verses exalt the importance of the Word of God in our lives. If you wish to leave as your legacy virtues that can produce victory in the present and future, following is an sample of the treat you are in for: "Blessed are they whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the Lord. Blessed are they who keep His statutes and seek Him with all their heart." (Psalm 119:1,2)

As with our family, you too are coming to Him who is …the living stone—rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to Him—you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. (I Peter 2:4-5)

I recall these words:
    Only one life
    ‘Twill soon be past
Only what’s done for Christ will last.
